Project Directions
Your goal is to show how global interactions encourages new identities, perspectives in philosophies, and ways of life. You are a student who is tired of boring educational videos. You want to engage your peers and show educators how it should be done. You will create a live 3-5 minute TED Talk in which you present one contribution from ancient Greece and a parallel modern day contribution, illustrating how multiple historical themes are interrelated. This TED Talk may be viewed by anyone interested in ancient Greece. In addition to your TED Talk, you will submit a written transcript of your presentation. You will be assessed on how well you reflect critical thinking skills in your project.
The summative task asks students to create a TED talk in order to help them understand that studying the modern-day impact and contributions of a civilization encourages new identities, perspectives in philosophies, and ways of life. They must inform the audience about a cultural or societal aspect that has impacted modern society in a way that considers their audience members.

TED TALK - Ancient Greece Philosophy
Have you ever thought about why some people don't believe in God? Have you
ever thought about why some people don't think about life in the same way you do? The
answer to those questions lies in the culture of Ancient Greek philosophy.
Greek philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle decided to use science
and logic to question many aspects of Ancient Greek life and today many people follow
lead and use their values to think about our life in a logical way. Now there are many
associations that support these people and what they are doing. In Ancient
Greece philosophers were often treated badly for "misguiding" children even though
they were just looking at life in a different way. The great Greek philosopher Socrates
died for looking at life in a different way and questioning the gods. Since Socrates was
not looking at life the same way most greeks were, they faced him with a choice. He
could either move out of Athens forever or eat poisonous berries called Hemlock. He
decided to eat the Hemlock even though his student, Plato, wanted to free him. Plato
was Socrates student. He was the reason we know about Socrates and his bravery in
the face of challenges. Plato wrote a book called The Republic about Socrates’ ideas
and life, he added his own ideas but sadly, it is hard to differentiate between Socrates’
and Plato’s ideas. They wanted a philosopher king in Greece. They thought this would
make Greece a much smarter and better civilization. A philosopher king would use logic
and science to make an advanced and lovely civilization to live in. Soon Plato became a
teacher and his best student was Aristotle. Aristotle's was good at many things from
politics to poetry. He also enjoyed studying dreams and the souls. Aristotle was the man
that trained Alexander the Great. He may have been the man who made Alexander
Great. He was his teacher and if Alexander was uneducated in politics he would not be
able to take over so many countries. Maybe Aristotle even gave Alexander his military
strategy. Who knows?!
Philosophy had a great impact on ancient Greece and the world today. One
example is that today some people question religion. They used a philosopher's point of
view on life. By looking at life in a philosophical way. They use science and logic to say
that God could not be true but, they could also use the myths or bible to show that these
things are true. Another example is when people break a problem down into many
questions, this was Socrates way of problem solving. You would answer one question at
a time and soon you would solve the main problem. One last impact is the modern
philosophy is based off of Greek philosophy and it's values. It has also influenced
modern science and the ways that people look at the world. These are only a few
reasons why philosophy was such an important part of Ancient Greek culture and our
lives today.
